Longest MP run you've ever done?

Quick question. There is a kilomarathon (16.1 miles for us imperialists) on the end of September. I was thinking of doing it at my goal MP for the Dublin marathon which is 4 weeks later. Just wondering how far others have ran at MP in training and is 16 MP miles 4 weeks out asking for trouble.

Daniels A plan (not the elite) has this 3 weeks out.

    2 w/up, 15 @ PMP and 2 c/d

My two cents would be that having it that close to the race means that PMP has to be realistic rather than a 'stretch goal' PMP. If its realistic then it should feel ok?

The Furman FIRST plan I'm following for DCM this year has 13 miles at MP two weeks before the race and then 10 miles at MP one week before.

Disclaimer I'm only following this plan with its three runs a week as a bit of a break from P&D so remains to be seen how it all works out!

Cool so seems a reasonable thing to do. Good call on the PMP, will definitely be running at a level that is plausible rather than aspirational.

Did a 20 mile PMP for Berlin a few years ago, 3 weeks before the race I think. It's one of the major reasons I'd imagine that I lost 10 minutes in the last 10k! 15 is the highest I would consider doing these days.

Is that the one in Kilcock? I just came across it on RunIreland. Have 18 miles with 14 @ MP run scheduled around that time so would be perfect for me. Do you know any more about it than what is on RunIreland? Run by the GAA club but they seem to be on the ball with AAI measured course etc...

That's the one. I know nothing else about it apart from what I seen on runireland myself

Thanks. Didn't know about this. Seems like a handy one to do for Dublin alright. I'd say they'll get more than a few entries for people with an eye on DCM.

My coach says he knows everything there is to know about running, and optimal marathon training in particular. I'll put the above to him and get back to you... ;)

Fair play to him for being able to put up with you.

Is the Daniels run 15 straight or with some breaks between the PMP miles? I only have the Kindle version of Daniels book & the A-plan is actually missing from it so can only see the elite plan.

No breaks - 15 in a row. Its the kind of session that you can only run at a realistic PMP. Problem is, the Daniels guide to paces is way too optimistic for the marathon in my view. So you can end up running this way too fast if you just follow his plan.

I think cork to cobh might be on the same day too which is 15 miles

I'm going to semi-hijack this thread to run one by ye. Did a 'progressive' run this morning of the following: 11k@5:00, 11@4:45 and 11@4:30. The last of these is my PMP. Is that a worthwhile session or would I be better aiming for say 20k @PMP?

Itziger, that's a very worthwhile session, but a very different one to the PMP type session we're talking about here. I did something similar to that yesterday; 1 mile warm-up, 4 at PMP + 30 seconds, 5 at PMP+20 seconds, 9 at PMP and one mile warmdown. I think I'll chance 12 at PMP midweek this week.

Yeah, thanks. I mean the idea of these is that you're doing the PMP stuff when you're tired right. So if I do maybe 6 or 8 k warm up and then 20k PMP that would be good too.

Interesting what you say about your 20 mile effort 3 weeks before Berlin. Sounds a bit much alright - certainly would be for me anyway.

That's a cracking session there. My coach has me doing a lot of these progression runs finishin at MP, but none as long as 33k.

I can't see how the above session would not be of great benefit
