Supercharged BMW 325ci insurance dilemma!!!

Hi guys I own a BMW e46 325ci (2.5L) with an ESS stage 2 superharger and im looking for an insurance company that could at least give me a quote. I am 23 have 5 years no claims.
Unfortunatly over the last two months I was in Asia so I let my tax and insurance run up. I tried insuring the car but no company would give me a quote bcoz the car was out of tax and I couldnt fill out the tax until the car was insured!! Typical Ireland!.
Anyway went with the one company that didnt ask for tax and that was 123.ie so I have a policy with them and thats only as an unmodified car... I need to change now that I have tax again so that I am fully covered...

Just want to make sure before I start declaring the supercharger that 123 will still insure high performance vehicles... Is there anyone else out there that has high powered cars on 123?
There are lots more Mods but those are the main ones.

    Thanks in advance...

Insurance companies will be a killer on this.

Liberty Insurance are your best bet. I have a good news bad news thread with the name of every insurance company I rang and the result.

Odds are you will need to speak to a manger at each company and provide an engineers report to state the vehicle is in good condition with the list of modifications.

I dint envy you though as an exhaust is a concern for an Insurer, a supercharger to them means you are mad max......

XSDirect can be good for performance cars if you're willing to accept the higher excess. €1,000 is the minimum you can bring it down to.

    Also try arachas in cork.
They will require an engineers report but have been the best for mods that I have dealt with.

123.ie in my experience wont insure any real performance mods.
I could get an exhaust ok but when I mentioned a remap they didn't want to know.

123 refused to continue my cover after working with RSA as an underwriter.

    Not a mod friendly company.

    [long winded story]
Also had a nightmare with them trying to get paperwork sorted and got very close to not being able to use the car over the Christmas period as they required an engineers report(no issue). Then never specified what they wanted on the report then refused to accept it as it was missing detail list of modifications, I got lucky and managed to contact the engineer at the day before Christmas breakup or i would be waking for Christmas. No wiggle room, would not cover the car full stop

Then they sent me a letter in Feb to state they could not renew my policy on the above car (exhaust, wheels, air filter, coilovers, import civic @ the ripe old age of 29).

    [/long winded story]

123 not on my list of companies Id deal with again, standard car or otherwise.

Best of luck with a supercharger I think I was still at stock power or as close as makes no difference.

I tried XS and they did the usual. We wont insure a car with that modification....

Your age could be a factor here.
It's quite a powerful and unique car for someone <25.

*Named driver policies => not recommended but legal.

*Quinn/Liberty cover modified cars but not cheap. They can still refuse you due to age or not liking you.

    *Garage/Trade policies

*Ask for a "Non standard risks policy" from all the insurers you call who refused you.

*The modified car owners you stated above can be paying quite allot for policies.

Hi JimmyCrackCorn! So you are suggesting ringing the companies and asking for a specific policy.. I have suggested to many companies being willing to take a large excess but they still claim they have no other cars on their policies that are as modified as mine!...

I very much doubt that or why are there r34 turbos with serious modifications... Surely they are not all cosmetic? the companies are telling me that all the modifications insured in ireland are for air filters and cosmetic mods.. Really? Is ireland still at that stage?

There are cars which do not have mods declared.

As new business most companies will avoid modified cars.

As for heavily modified cars they are generally insured with a company as a changeover from another car or on trade policies.

See my old thread on how much fun insurance can be and Im old....

What kind of horsepower is it with the supercharger?

She is averaged at 340HP with the intercooler. Straight through exhaust and other upgrades should mean I am meeting this. Have not dynoed yet but it is a 2.5L with a 9PSI intercooled supercharger so you do the math!!:)

I just wish that they could just call it an m3 and call it a day... There is no difference except more pressure on the internals... which doesnt exactlly matter to an insurance company..

As for the suggestions for liberty and asking for a high excess. They wont even hear it. I guess its being 23 (although 5 years no claims!!) and when I meantion supercharger. I think it is genuinely the word itself that scares the companies. I changed it to 'forced air intake' but they didnt know what this was so they also said no...

I really dont think I will be in a better situation in a few years as I really dont think there is a place for this kind of '"heavily"legal tuning' in Ireland and I wait for someone who can prove me wrong!!! That is a call out by the way!!

Money is not the problem... I would be willing to take a 10G excess if it meant that if I crashed into a new Merc I wouldnt be liable!!

I would be willling to pay up to 3G for insurance seing as my current insurance is 900 and the same for an m3 is 1200..

    Last call for anyone?????

I use First Ireland, they had no issue when I put an upgraded intercooler on my old car.

    Back on topic lads.

Also before this thread continues in the vain of insurance will never know. I know two assessors, they are not stupid and I know people have had their insurance voided due to not declaring...

To be honest OP, I think you're mad to be trying to insure a supercharged 325. You'd be better off trying to get insured on a C180 Kompressor - that's supercharged ;) You would have a better chance if it came from the factory with the supercharger but since it's obviously totally aftermarket, you're making life hard on yourself.

Another problem is that "supercharger" is a term that frightens insurance companies. I'm of the opinion that they don't understand that it's a turbo with a belt and there's nothing really "super" about it.

I'm 26 with 8 years NCB. My last renewal was in December on a Mazda6 MPS and it was €700. Last week I changed to a 335i and my insurance company wanted another €103 from me. When I got the documents in the post, I saw that my annual premium is €1075. Granted it's worth quite a bit but the main thing in the policy is still the risk posed by me, not the car.

If you do get a quote, I would say it will be huge. With regard to your comment about if you crashed into a merc, you wouldn't be liable - of course you would be liable if YOU crashed into the merc, not the other way round. You would have to pay the first (as you said) €10,000 and the insurance company pays the rest. There goes your NCB and you're back to square 1 again with no 325iSC ;)
