    Hello,
New to the boards, so this might have been asked before!

I have a BA and a MA. During my BA I took 2 history modules, 1 business module and 3 Irish modules, obviously I don't have enough credits in any of these subjects for the teaching council, however, my question is what do I need to do in order to get enough credits to get in to a Dip?? Basically what I really want to do is teach history and business. I got in to a MA History but I've been told that this may not be enough for a dip, the teaching council couldn't say one way or another. I don't want to spend a full year (& €5000) on something that isn't going to get me any further to teaching! Also, having done 5 years of university surely I don't need to do another 4 year degree and then a dip! There has to be an easier way! If I was to do a PGCE in England would I be able to teach here in Ireland?

Thanks in advance for the advice! At a crossroads in my life and really need to make a decision on my future! :)

You can pick up some History modules with Oscail to register with History. That would be long distance with either DCU, UL or UCC. I'm sure there's somewhere you could pick up additional business modules, but I wouldn't know - perhaps the Open University? If you did them with the OU you'd have to pay 200e for the Teaching Council to assess the modules. You can absolutely teach here with the PGCE, but when you come back you'll have to sit the History of Irish Education exam in Maynooth - simples!

With the UK PGCE you could teach here - but only if the TC accepts your degree for an LC subject. It doesn't matter if it would be acceptable in the UK.

I wouldn't go down the masters route - the TC almost never consider masters when assessing your modules for a subject.

Would taking a diploma course in business give you enough credits for what is needed? Also have you tried ringing the teaching council? Maybe they could offer you some advice...... I believe their office hours are 11-12 every second Tuesday or something along this lines ;). But seriously I would ring them and ask would do no harm!
