    Hi all,

So I bought a new laptop earlier, a nice budget Toshiba. I'm eager to get the laptop off to the best possible start, and if anyone could help with a few queries that would be great.

Also, this could be a handy thread for anyone with a new laptop, so if I've forgotten anything please add you two cents.

    1. Virus protection...AVG or MSE? (Free programmes)

    2. What is the best way to maintain battery performance? Have heard/read conflicting ideas.

    3. Best power source settings?

And in general, what can I do to ensure that the laptop is properly looked after...I'm not that up to date on what needs to be done, but I do know that a laptop is kind of like a car, and needs regular maintenance.

    Cheers in advance

    MSE

Use the laptop as you wish, the battery will degrade regardless. Some batteries are better, but at the end of the day it's not worth worrying about imo.

Power source settings depend entirely on what you're doing.

For me, it's highest performance when plugged in, and the best battery life when not.

I run a computer repair business and have set up hundreds of new computers in my time and I recommend you install avg free version and also a preventative maintenance program called ccleaner.
