Hi I know it has probably been asked a million times, so sorry in advance, but I just want to know what my actual chance of getting into the armed response unit after 3 years service is. I have a good leaving cert and I am currently studying for a level 8 law degree but being in the armed response unit in my home town of Limerick is my dream job. Do i actualy have a reasonable chance of getting in after becoming a garda?

Zero chance after 3 years service. And you won't be allowed be stationed in your home town either . It's a minimum 40km from your hometown afaik

its not all cops, robbers and guns, you probably want to get into it for all the wrong reasons, alot different from what u see on tv. more like ten years service, one of the hardest positions to get into in the guards. the way things are you'll be blessed if you even get a chance to join the guards.

After 3 yrs absolutely no chance. No problem joining with that goal in mind but it would take you a minimum 10 yrs. New rules out since lsat year state you cannot be stationed within 80 km from your home.

Quick question, if you have a father/relative in the Guards does this rule still stand? I have heard people saying this before in the past but I don't see why it wouldn't still stand.

    Hi Nog,

Is this 80km rule just for the RSU unit?

80 km doesn't sound right to me nog. most gards eventually end up getting back to the division next to their home division provided they have no relatives in it.
the distance rule is just a guideline really. i no of a guard who recently got sationed about 40km from where he was born a reared after 5 years service, but it was a different division, there are alot of things that are taken into consideration. this is also an area where the so called "pull" is often put to use.

You can't be stationed in your home district but you can be stationed in your home division.

Nothing yet, there won't be either with Alan Shatter at the helm. All you can do is wait I'm afraid. Have you registered on publicjobs.ie?

I'm waiting to get into the reserves myself now, turned 18 this year, I'l go to college first just in case they make that a requirement, I have plenty of time, hopefully they will have started recruiting again in the next 4 years. How do you find the reserves? I have a lot of family in the guards which has given me a good insight into the job but id like to have my own experience.
