Advice Needed

I am due to repeat the final year of my course again this year. I am 22 years old (23 next May) and am living in Galway (where I am studying) independantly from my parents since May. I had a job up until 3 weeks ago but am now receiving Social Welfare.

I have never applied for a student grant in the previous years of my course. Would I be eligible for the student grant this year and if so, would my parents income be considered?

As far as I know that's what the Student Grant is based on, your parent's income. So if your parent's are good earners, it's unlikely you'll get the grant.

Here's a link to the Citizens Information page.

There's a thread with similar information below. You wont be considered as independent from your parents because you need to be living away from them from October 1st in the year before the first point of entry to the course. So that means your parents income would be considered.

I have been living away from home since last september (ie. for the college year just passed and for the summer) or do you mean that I would have had to have been living independent from my parents from when my course actually started 3 years ago?

Yes, you would have had to be living away from them from before the course first started. Stupid rule in my opinion but that's the way it works.
