Checked out an 07 Honda Civic today with 25,000 km on the clock. The only documentation was the log book and the NCT cert - the NCT cert confirmed the mileage.
How can I check if this car has been clocked? The car was in very good condition but 25,000 km in 5 years seems barely credible.

It is possible that car has small milage. Try and get owners name and address from VLC and look them up in the phone book.

There are genuine low mileage cars out there. My biggest worry about low mileage cars though is that alot of them don't get regular servicing as their owners either go by the mileage service interval or think they don't need a service that often due to lack of use. Irrespective of the mileage the car should at least get an oil change once a year.

The cert confirmed the mileage it had when it went through the test. If they did clock it they want to be a bit thick to do it after the test and then give you the test sheet.

It is possible for a young lad driving 10km per day to work and back. Did you meet the owner. What age was he/she and did they have L plates on the car by any chance?

    Motorcheck.ie

Personally i would prefer a car with 3x that milage that has been serviced properly.

If the car has not been serviced in 5 years thats not good

No service history at all? I'd keep looking.

I did a cartell check and their record of the mileage is the same - I don't know but I reckon that cartell thing isn't worth much.

Its entirely credible.........why not get a look at VLC - and make a note of previous owner, and contact them ?

    clocked?

possible just a case of human error, but then again may not be. ? Iam just going by adverts, havent seen the car in person or anything.

    What you think?

Newest advert with lower mileage. 89,000miles

Older advert with 96,000 miles in a different garage.

    3rd advert with 92,000miles?

I would guess that it is just an error. Changing the milage by only 7,000 miles will have no effect on the value.

As long as the car was clocked before the first nct (after 4 years) then all mileage checks will show up as no discrepancies.

Is it still on original tyres?

Nct and mileage don't really mean a lot; I had to replace the cluster in my car in between tests and the replacement cluster was reading 35k less. There was no comment from the tester and the mileage was recorded as per the cluster.

    probably never serviced

My mum has a 2007 Jazz with just 30k kms on the clock, so its possible.

As Colm says, check for things like the original tyres. Mums car still has the original back tyres on it. Is it being sold privately or through a main dealer? If its a main dealer, ask them to do a check on the internal system which logs recalls. If there was a recall, it would show the mileage on their internal system which wont be on cartell etc.

Main dealer might give that info out anyway even if they arent selling it.

Entirely possible. Our 06 Fiesta has only 38k km and has been serviced every 12 months regardless of mileage....no wonder its never gave a days trouble in 7 years!
