Also is it much hassle to get the car registered in the Republic.

Budget is 10k-14k.

Thing is though that there is no great savings by importing at the moment due to the euro/sterling exchange rate and cars in NI tend to be that bit more expensive over those on the UK mainland. I would also be reluctant to buy a used diesel car from NI, there is alot of washed diesel about up there that can cause all sorts of long term problems. I personally would not take the chance.

Also utvdrive and gumtree. In terms of dealers there are lots of small local ones that offer good value.
Cars over in Britain are much cheaper but can have higher mileage.

As for washed diesel this would be much less prevalent in new cars. People from border areas know where to go for the cheap stuff and where to avoid when filling their new beamer!

Just looking at some A4's up north. The price difference is pretty big I think. £10,000 for 08 A4 and they are all over 20k here.

it might be worth doing on the emission based system... The premium for diesel in the uk is nowhere what it is like here. its fairly easy to do a comparison, go onto autotrader.ni and then work out the vrt...

£8250 for an A4 2.0Tdi SE with 110,000 miles. That's €10,192.18 according to XE (and you won't get that exchange rate, probably closer to €10,500).

VRT is coming back at €3,163 with emmissions of 144g (early B8 A4's were band C) giving a grand total of €13,355 - if you can get a decent exchange rate and don't have any travel costs.

Now, not the best colour (or reg) and is most likely lower spec than the UK version, but it's hardly a massive difference between €14,450 and €13,355.

You'll also negotiate a decent discount from an Irish dealer but would be lucky to get £250 off a UK dealer.
