Recommendations please on 2nd hand car choice....

My budget is 6000 max.
Looking for something in the 2004 - 2006 bracket, if not newer.
I'd like a 1.6, petrol is fine as my mileage will be very low.
Reliable, low maintenance are my main concerns.

Just looking for recommendations on make/model rather than specific cars, but if you have a specific car to recommend that would be great.
It will be my first car also!

1.8 but the difference is going to be minimal really. id definitely go for the mazda 6. a 1.6 is likely to be underpowered in a saloon anyway

There is but a lot of 1.6 owners would prefer the 1.8 as its a nicer car to drive.

Nah, I could afford to probably, but I cant justify it given that I wont be using it much, weekends really.
I drive a bike during the week, and just want the car for shopping, and a bit more flexibility for getting away at weekends and so forth. And of course to have the option during our great winters

That generation 6 only comes in 1.8, 2.0 and 2.3

There never was a 1.6 litre Mazda 6 thankfully. Motor tax on the 1.8 litre is €592 per year versus €478 for a 1.6 litre. That is an extra €2.20 per week. Fuel costs don't really come into it when doing such low mileage either. There is great value in the Mazda 6 these days, you would pick up a 2007 model well within your budget:
