    Hi all,

Friend is heading there in a couple of weeks and asked me would i stick a thread up here for her. Pretty much wanting to know about getting from the airport to Sorrento itself, firstly.

She's flying to Naples airport and wants to go to Sorrento (where she's staying). Apparently a transfer in advance works out around €150 (there's four of them, I think) so I suggested just hailing a taxi at the airport, but she's unsure of the cost of that (as am I) so just thought I'd ask here to see if anyone with experience could possibly advise?

Secondly, she's already got a few things to do planned, but never any harm in asking; does anyone have any recommendations for interesting things to do or places to see (that may not be widely promoted or obvious) to a first time visitor to the place?

Thanks in advance to anyone able to offer any insight or help. :)

You can get the Hydrofoil across the bay from Naples port for in or around €12 / €15 I think, takes about 40mins otherwise you can get the train from Naples main train station to Sorrento (circumvesuviana), that would be cheaper, personally if it was me I'd take the Hydrofoil

Bring a **** load of cash.

Pompeii is good. It costs €11 in, But get a guide outside. Usually works out a €10 a head for the guide. You could do it in about 1 hour and a half. Try go in the morning when its not as hot. We went at 4pm and it was steaming hot. Bring lots of water with you and decent Shoes.

Capri we done yesterday. I would recommed doing a tour for this. It usually works out around €70 per person, and you get to see the full island. There is a lot of hidden little charges though, Like if you want to see the Blue caves, You have to pay to rent out a boat etc. We done Capri with out a guide and it cost us €68 between us for Just the Boat over. Capri is very expensive !!! €14 for a Ice Cream and a Slush Puppy along the front.

Capri i think was a bit over rated and very very expensive.

In Sorrento, You can do the little train trip which works out at €6 and is good value.

Look out for La Primevera Ice Cream Parlour on the Main st. You can get into it from the Main St or the Back St. It is the most famous ice cream parlour in sorrento, and every one from Beckham to the Pope has been in it. Has pictures all over the wall of famous people who have been there. It has over 80 different ice cream flavours. They were giving away free Ice Cream last night.

Drink is expensive, so it won't really be a drinking Holiday. Food is reasonably priced too.

We got a local bus from airport to Sorrento. We had to wait nearly 2 hours (?) for it to leave. It was very hot and very packed! lot of people standing and winding roads with steep drops  but prob cheap. Alternative was a bus into Naples then train along. Buses leave from out front of airport.

I was not mad on Sorrento as a town. I thought it a bit scruffy. It has fab view out over bay and can see Vesuvius. I fell and hurt knee so cramped my activities somewhat. Eating out = prices about same as here with wine less so. But good base to explore .... Pompeii by train or even into Naples and boats to Capri. Positano and rest of Amalfi coast as well. We were there mid June and VERY HOT.

Most people get the train from Naples to Sorrento.

It takes an hour and costs less than €5.

Capri and definitely Anacapri is well worth it.

Obviously Pompei is a must. Go on a group guided tour.

Travel along the Amalfi coast to places like Positano, Ravello etc.

Thinking of booking a sun holiday In Italy at the end of May for two weeks for myself and the Girlfriend. Naples/Sorrento sound like the best option at the moment. Would there be enough things to see and do for two weeks in the region without a car?

A week was plenty for us, we flew into Rome, 4 days there, plenty to see & do, down to Sorrento for a week, a couple of hours on the train, back up to Rome for a night and flew home, an enjoyable holiday.

I'd avoid Naples TBH, filthy horrible place. Rome and Sorrento would be enough to see you happy and occupied for 2 weeks anyway.
