Ok so Iv been doing some decorating around the house, getting it ready for son's debs, amongst all the chaos my charger seems to have vanished. I was hoping to go on a ramble tomorrow but need to charge battery.

"IF" I used the USB cable and USB 3 pin plug can I charge the battery while still in camera?

Wishful thinking either way mate - USB on Nikon DSLRS is for data transfer only. The battery is too high capacity to be charged through it.
