Mobilehomes in gardens

Was driving along the coast today and I started noticing that there appears to be a lot of homes with 1 or maybe 2 mobile homes on their site. Now given that these houses already have sea views I can only presume that people are renting the space to individuals who own the mobile homes or perhaps they are renting the mobile homes themselves. I read a couple of posts here a couple of mins ago that seems to suggest that the owners of these properties would need to get planning permission to have the mobile home on their property.

I was just wondering if this was common. I was thinking of buying a mobile home but some of the site fees are putting me off - just wondering if there were any alternatives and the above popped into my head today as I drove along the coast - Any insight welcome
