Hi. I'm not sure if this is the right board to post this in so apologies if it isn't but I am very curious about this moth I saw today.

I was taking the washing off the line today and noticed a huge moth in the basket. I got an awful fright:o It was the biggest moth I ever saw. I eventually got it out of the basket but it can't seem to fly. It is still on the trampoline now. (The lighter is only to show size of moth not for any other reason!) I posted the picture on facebook and a friend had seen one in her garden too and that it couldn't fly away either. Would be very interested in knowing what it is and why I have not seen anything so big ever before! Thanks.

Its a Convolvulous Hawkmoth, a rare migrant to Ireland from southern Europe and North Africa. Congrats, a very good find. It would be fantastic if you could send the sighting details to Angus Tyner who runs the MothsIreland website, to keep track of such rare migrants. See the bottom of the front page for the email address.
Silently curses the world for such rare moths never turning up in my own back garden. :P

Thanks very much :) I will forward the details to mothsireland. It is still on the trampoline and doesn't seem to be in a rush to move. It actually seems like it can't move :(

I guess it is probably exhausted from its long journey. I don't think there is anything that can be done to help it (sugar/water solution?) other than putting it somewhere out of the way so it won't be eaten by predators.

PM me the details if you haven't contacted MothsIreland already :)

This moth is probably already gone. They rest by day. they can only fly after warming up which in a moth of this size can take a few minutes. They are quite reluctant to go to this effort.
Very often! they are found on clothes lines, I think attracted by the scent of the washing detergent.
I must gather info on what detergent is being used.....so if you wouldn't mind informing me :)
We'd really like details of your friends sighting as well. Is there a photo of this one, could be a different species.
    Details to include
    Location
    Grid Ref www.gridreference.ie is good.
    Name of observer(s)

There have been a few migrants reported from last few days with this warm weather.
