Roof bars for 2000 VW Polo Estate (Variant)????

Hi all. Can anyone solve this mystery for me - I wish to get roof bars for a Polo Variant (Estate) Year 2000. The car does not have nor ever had roof rails. Instead, the car has four roof flaps but there is absolutely nothing but a narrow empty space beneath these (no screw attachments or anything else of any sort). I have been to several VW outlets and as yet nobody has worked out how roof bars were meant to be attached at these "fixing points." Apparently the Polo Classic may have had a similar arrangement of empty spaces under the flap doors while the hatch version from that era apparently does have some type of attachment point!!! If anyone has any suggestions, I would be grateful.
