Aviva Ignition Questions

I just passed my Theory Test yesterday. I'm 16 so the questions don't matter really until my birthday in March but I want to be prepared.

Main question is if you have to go on your own policy to get the discount? Can you still get the claimed 40% off if you go under a parent's name?

My other question is how does it really save you? Say, for example, I wait until I have my Full Licence to get my own car (sometime before Christmas '13) the average cost for someone with a small car that young lads get is around 1,400-1,600EURO under a parent, so is it worth it to use the Ignition in the first year or two? Or is it more economical to just go under a parent and then use the Ignition thingy?

Thanks, sorry for the long post so here's a spud:

Can't speak for Aviva but to the best of my knowledge your discount only applies to any policy you take out primarily in your own name.

As to the rest of your post, insurance is not cheap when you are starting out. Unfortunately new drivers are deemed a high risk bracket especially males.
Whilst it is law to have insurance and until the Govt take steps in introducing a cap on insurance then the companies have you over a barrel. The old saying to ask around would apply here.
Just because Aviva are offering this 40% discount doesn't necessarily mean they are going to work out cheaper than other insurance companies with 10% or 20% discount.
You should have the opportunity to increase your excess to reduce your premium (though sometimes its not a great reduction, if any at all. Again, shop around). If you were looking for a new car you wouldn't take the first one you looked at, likewise don't accept the first quote you've been given. In addition, don't think you are stuck with Aviva insurance because you are taking your lessons with them.

Lastly when it comes to insurance quotes remember the phrase "All that glitters is not gold". Always read the small print and phone the company directly if you have any questions or concerns that way if you feel you've been deceived they may have the conversation recorded "for training purposes".
My advice - Phone Aviva and ask them the same questions you have posted here.
    Good Luck
