Hi there not sure if this is the right section but basically I am looking at taking up a job that would possibly involve me driving an 180 excavator occasionaly. Now i was looking on the FAS website about getting my CSCS card and from what i make of it, it is impossible.
am i right in saying that if i do the 3 day course i would then have to do 6 months on site experience with another driver before i would actually be certified?
like in this day and age where could you even think of getting that!
well if anyone could clear up the process for me i would greatly appreciate it thnaks.

You could have done a better job in relocating the op's post. This relates more to construction than Learning to Drive.

Sorry op you may not have much success in this forum in looking for an answer.

You could try posting in the 'Work & Jobs' forum. You may have more success there.

Its the other way round. You have to have a minimum of 6 months experience driving a machine under the constant supervision of a certified driver before you can sit the test.

Typical set up. You're not allowed drive without a card, can't get a card without driving!!

If you have the skills already and can operated the machine as an owner operator FAS will accept a letter from you stating that you have the experience and are able to operate the machine when you apply for the test.

    Good luck!

thanks amp for the reply, ha yeah I sort of thought it was that way when I first read it but I thought to myself surely the good people at fas would see how stupid this setup sounds "cough"
so would i have to have myself registerd as a company/ vat registered or actually have my own machine to be considered an owner operator,
or if would a better route be if say I knew someone in the business to give me a letter to state that i had 6 months site experience or would they actually look into this?

like with the greatest respect to drivers out there having known/seen some highly skilled operators almost split hairs with buckets, all I want to do is drive a digger on occasion, I accept that there is reason for some sort of training, but in the times we are in where do FAS think that someone is going to get 6 months experience driving on a site when there are hundreds of skilled drivers out there without work?

and yes i dont really think this is the right section to have this thread in.
I put in in construction as i figured there would be people on the construction forum that would have the cscs card might not be as many here in learning to drive with it..

Depending on your skills as an operator you may be ok to sit the test with a letter saying you have experience.

There is no point rocking up with a nice letter and not being able to operate the machine. Smooth operation, awareness of people and objects surrounding you, safety in the dig, planning the dig. Knowing the service points of the machine and pre-op checks.

If you aren't experienced and confident outside the machine with a respect for it when you're inside it will be obvious.
