Replacement for 99 Passat 1.9 TDI

    Evening,

I have a 99 1.9 TDI Passat (90 bhp) with 190,000 miles on it. Original everything apart from the clutch and regular service items such as brakes, timing belt.

Car gets a regular service but recently failed NCT due to several items. Approx cost of repair €500 (incl of labour). Just back from a 1,000 mile drive around Ireland (nearly all of it on motorway) and coming into the drive way the front right wishbone/track arm fractured and dropped the front of the car.

I'll get it repaired if economically viable but now I'm thinking about a new car.

I love the passats and would like a 2008/2009 but I hear very mixed reviews about the engines, electrics.

Would any recommend a 2008/2009 Passat?

I was then thinking about a Skoda Octavia or Superb from the same years?

    Anything good/bad to say ?

Have a look at the Jetta, it's a Golf with a boot but they are similar in size to your existing Passat, they don't seem to suffer the same issues as the Passat and they cost alot less.

The 08+ models dont give any problems other than normal wear and tear items. Whats yout budget and whats your annual mileage..

Budget around 12-14ish. Normally around 12,000 miles a year. Weekly mileage is about 150 miles with the rest made up of trips to visit family in Dublin/Cork/Mayo.

Apart from the Mayo trips all on Motorway (as is my daily driving bar the last 2 miles at the home end).

Your mileage hardly warrants a diesel. You will pick up a newer car cheaper. The Passat TSI would be worth looking at, You will easily get a 08 well within budget in the Highline model..
