Buying a car with no NCT

    Lads,

Do you think I'm mad buying a car without an NCT?
It's a 04 Mazda 6, 1.8 petrol, full service history, 112K kilometres on the clock.

The fact that it has a full service history to me sounds like I should be alright as research indicates that these cars are bullet proof. The guy selling it says he could put it through the NCT and up the price. Sounds genuine enough. I was thinking if there are issues should be superficial enough and not any expensive mechanical problems... But you never know, hence the question.

    What do you think?

This doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Does he have a lot of money? Is the NCT out long? When was it last serviced? Have you verified the service history with the garage(s)? Are you he hasn't tested the car and it failed?

If he's that confident it will pass tell him to put it through and you'll give him an extra €75 for the car (and his time).

He says there's a lot of interest in the car and it will be gone this weekend. It's a really decent price.

I was thinking of viewing it and getting why it's up for sale, past NCT, last service etc...

I know, if it looks to good to be true then...

    Bargain though.

I had a 2002 1.8 Mazda 6 and yes, they ARE bulletproof. But a 04 with no NCT sounds a bit iffy. As stated already, how are you to know he didn't test it and it failed on something too expensive for him to fix?

Yeah, tell him to put it through and offer him about a ton extra but no more. Even if you don't buy it, what has he to lose? He can ask a higher price and shift it quicker!

Sounds like a back street dealer to me. You can get most of that information over the phone. Can you post a link to the ad?

It'll only cost €55 to see the fail sheet...

YOu should check the car out regardless of if its tested or not. If you don't do that I do think you're mad unless the purchase price of the car is an insignificant amount of cash to you.

So tell us what is the decent price?

Are you sure the mileage is in kilometeres? I'd go and view it if I were you and see if it really does have a full service history.

Guys name is down as Mazda. I'd lay money it's not his name on the log book. Bet he's selling it for "a friend of his"

Call the number and tell him you are calling about the car. Don't say mazda. See what happens. "Which car?" I bet:)

Could well be a bargain, but go in with your eyes open. There are several guides out there about questions to ask the seller. Bring a mechanic if you can.

Nice car €1400 , sounds too good to be true!
    Is there outstanding finance?
When did the last NCT expire?
Do you intend getting a Cartell Report?
Seems odd that the car does not have a current NCT it is only €50!

The car should have been nctd in 2008 and 2010 and again this year,it would definitely want checking out further.

Think we may nominate this seller also for 'Shady Dealer of Year Award'

Wonder if car has a DL Reg plate?

Things that sound too good to be true usually end up being that way. A clean, trouble free 8 year old Mazda 6 even without an NCT would fetch a bit more than €1600.

Why do you keep posting that line?

    OP

    1: It's 04, it's not kilometers.

2: They're hubcaps, not alloys (Is that actually the car?)

3: You can't see the reg

4: There's no NCT or Tax

    5. Do a Forest Gump on it.

How many cars is that person selling?
if its such a great car, he should just get the nct done, or if its the year he's thinking of wasting if its not sold, just NCT when someone expresses an interest.
Loads of interest he says, maybe it is ok, still plenty of cars to choose from, dont be rushed by the fear it will be snapped up. It might be snapped up, but better that then get stuck with a bad car.
Neither would I rely on the NCT to tell you how great it is, but at around those prices I wouldnt spend a fortune on getting it checked, cartell or motorcheck, whichever is recommended here and have someone have a good look around/under it.

Mazda 6's are very difficult to sell for good money. Without a test its worth 1200. I sold a 04 mazda 6 with a years test and 4 new dunlop sport tyres, 106000, 1 owner, touring spec last year for 2000 and was lucky to get the money.
They are a great car, they are a pig on juice. They are very heavy on tyres and the 04 was recalled to have metal plates put in under the rear wheel arches for corrosion 2 years ago so I would look for rust on them now and see whether the recall was done. The throttle body spindle can give trouble but rarely does, very expensive fix. It will feel like the pedal is stuck for a moment. They can burn oil if they have missed services and can be heavy on rear suspension bushins. Otherwise bulletproof and good ride quality.

    Thought you'd like an update.

Went to see that car today.

Car mechanically was sound but the body was pretty bad. lot of panels had deep scratches. Needs a good bit of body work.

The story behind it is a very shady one indeed. Apparently the guy is selling it for his solicitor... the owner has been evicted from the country. The guy wasn't even driving it, some other guy was, and the other was going home to England on Monday. All a bit mad and not really believable.

Anyway, as you can imagine, I decided to pass.

How did you keep a straight face when he was telling that bull :D

Did he even have a log book ?

    Didn't ask.

He did have the service book and the full service history amounted to about 3 services in the last 3 years and a one other service in '06 I think. I didn't even check to make sure the book was for that car. I had already decided to pass on it at that stage.

i bought my astra from a dealer two years ago, and the NCT was almost up, but got a NCT warrenty with the car, and got it in writing and signed which i made sure i would get before giving them a penny, and the astra sailed through no problem, and to this day never have any big problem with it
