2006 Peugeot 407 2ltr diesel stuttering

Hi Folks. Maybe somebody might be able to help me with this one...
I have a 2006 Peugeot 407 2ltr diesel, 75k miles. Recently the car has started to do something different...
when in lower gears (2nd & 3rd) the car kind of hestitates or stutters. It's hard to explain but it's like it intermittently loses power but it immediately kicks back in. It doesn't happen if you give it some beans in those gears though. Same thing happens in the higher gears (5th & 6th) but it's less noticable, more like you're driving into a strong wind & getting slowed down every few feet. My mechanic had a look yesterday and reckons there may be a small diesel leak causing the fuel regulator (???) to pump too much or not enough juice (or something along those lines).
    Any suggestions..?
