Thick white smoke from exhaust

I went to test drive a car today at a dealership, and when I first started driving it, thick white smoke started pouring from the exhaust. Now it seemed to clear up as I drove and had pretty much stopped by the time I got back to the dealership (after about 3-4 miles), but I was just wondering should I steer well clear of the car or is this normal if the car has been sitting a few months? I was planning on getting a mechanic to look at it before I buy anyway, but should I even bother? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

More than likely car warming up.

Did you check the coolant before you started it?

    Thanks for the reply.

No I didn't check. I reckoned it was just as it had been sitting and dealer said he'd had it for 3 months but now I'm worried it might be something more serious.

Let the car cool down well, check the oil and coolant. Hissing, mayonaied oil cap, low coolant, steer clear

If you're already having reservations about buying the car and concerned with the white smoke then simply don't buy it, wait for another to come along and don't spend money on a mechanic when there is seemingly something wrong.
Your paying a mechanic to tell you something you sort of already know yourself.
