Only need 3 things to travel
Passport and necessary visas

The smallest bag you think you can travel with

A sense of adventure

Other good things to have are health/travel insurance, vaccines as necessary, a credit card and a sense of humour

Do you plan to work in Oz? If so you need a working holiday visa.

I find you can make many plans but if you go with an open mind, like it sounds you are then you will meet people and your plans will change anyway, just go with the flow and enjoy every minute of it.
