No marriage record

I cannot find a marriage record for my grandfather and grandmother in the general register office. I have tried several years before and after the most likely date - 1910.

Anybody have any thoughts on why there would be no official record?

the most common reason for not finding a record is usually a misspelling of the names - but it's possible that the civil record never made it to the GRO. The Index was created manually and there are omissions and mistakes - e.g. for one set of my gtgt-granparents I could locate the groom but no sign in the Index books for a cross match for the possible name I had the bride. Took a chance & ordered the cert anyway and it matches the details I had. Double checking the index afterward confirmed no entry. It could be there somewhere with a typo and impossible to find...

Can you post the names and locations, and have you located the couple on the 1911 census ?

I found a church record of a marriage in 1903, but couldn't find a mention in the civil index. The GRO actually did me a favor and looked at the registers anyway and said there was no record of it. So it is possible that it isn't listed. Been a royal pain in my ass not having that record...

I also had one like Shane, where the bride wasn't in the index and I took a chance that the groom was the right one (and it was).
