I got a C1 in english yesterday.I was dissapointed as I was trying to get a B and missed out on my course.

What really got to me though was that some friends of mine who hadnt even answered the poetry question (they were part of the people who banked on Heaney and Plath) managed to get B's.Its not like they're brilliant at english either

I know of about ten people as well as myself who feels your anger/disgust right now. :(

Alot of the time in English it depends who marks you're paper. There is a bit of luck in what mark you get. Ideally each paper should be marked by 3 examiners and you get the average but that's not practical in the real world.

With you right there! I know of people who got caught out by that, left out the poetry question or attempted it, they got B's while I gots a C3, C1 last year... Gonna appeal it, if the grade doesn't upgrade, hard luck to me I guess. :)

Wow this is just how I feel.

I was aiming for a b3/b2 and got a c1, whereas my friend who has been failing all since 5th year and got 38 in his mock got a flipping B2.
I'm happy for him, but I'm a bit disappointed in myself. I'm afraid to get it checked in case I get even worse! :P

I'm appealing mine ASAP. I was devastated with English, having been an A1/A2 student right throughout school. Others in my class who aren't great at English got A2's and B1/2s. It's a disgrace, I ended up getting a C1.

Guys if you're not happy, appeal it. English is so subjective, it completely depends on your markers. I was anticipating a B2, B1 at absolute best and ended up getting an A1 yesterday. I honestly feel I may have gotten a generous corrector, so if you feel you may have done better than the grade you got, appeal it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 328 ✭✭Random_Person

English is completely dependant on the corrector you get.

For example, for all for 5th and 6th year I got either C's or low B's, nothing ever higher than a B2. In the mocks I got a B3. Yesterday I got my English result and was fully expecting another B but I opened the envelope to be presented with an A2! I just can't understand how I got it.. so I'm putting it down to the corrector.

View it, get the opinion of a teacher and then decide if you want to get it rechecked. You may get a new, generous corrector who loves your writing style and end up with a shiny new mark. :pac:

I would also definitely advocate appealing. I was fully expecting to get possibly a C1 at best as I had been caught out by the poetry and wrote three pages of utter nonsense on Kavanagh. Looking back I also feel my composition on paper one wasn't terribly strong either yet I somehow managed to get an A2! It really is all about the examiner with English. It's such a subjective subject.

I know a few that feel the same way.
I know I got lucky with my result anyways (got a B1 when I honestly thought I was in the Cs).
So really, unfortunately, it depends on your maker and their personal opinion, likes and dislikes.

You can't spell 'disappointed' correctly yet expect a B in English?

I did my Leaving Cert last year , higher level , got an A1.
I repeated my Leaving Cert this year and got a C1 .
    A difference of 30 points .
This English result affected my results greatly.
I now have to use my points from last year.
I feel guilty for my parents paying for a grind school and accommodation this year , all for nothing !
    English can be so subjective.
    I am getting english rechecked.
I have to get an improvement of 15 points this year even to equal last year.
    C'est la vie !!!!!!!!!!!

I had the shock of my life when I saw my english result everyones told me to appeal they know it shouldn't be a D1 here's hoping it at least get's to a C1/B3 might be far to high to go up. I did ordinary last year I picked up the honours course in a year. Even any work I've handed up all through the year I never received a single D the lowest result I ever got was a C1. The majority of my results haven't turned out as they should be tbh. English is one of my strongest subjects.

It really isn't. But Advising Examiners check sample papers at various stages during the marking process, and this helps to ensure consistency. English is definitely one of the most difficult to ensure complete consistency in, though.

@ OP and others: I'm going to say this a lot over the next few days, as every year, but ...

Arrange to VIEW any papers in which you're disappointed with the result / feel you did better than your mark suggests in the company of an *experienced examiner* in the subject if at all possible ... this might be your own teacher or another English teacher from the school, or even a family friend. This will give you a much better idea of whether you should appeal or not.

That would be a valid point if it was a spelling test.

Was hoping for a high B.. And kinsella was my No 1 poet  Ended up with a D- disgusted :(
I've heard of pleanty of "pleany" people who got Bs and even As.. fair play to them but i just don't get it? my worst ever was a C2 for the past 6 years in english :(

Disappointed with English, I got a C2 whereas in school I'd usually get high B's as I did in mocks... I suppose its all down to who corrects it.. *sigh*

That's mad, the exact same thing happened to me!
I got a C1 and my friend who didn't even answer the poetry got a B3! How does that work? That's 12.5% gone straight away!

You can add me to that list. I suppose it doesn't matter though as long as I get my course.

Also seems to be a huge number of "ermahgerd I got an A1?!" </3 :pac:

I'd say we all got the same examiner who just gave up after the first few papers and gave everyone a C1! :P

Expected a b3 got a D1 was in shock. Already gave school appeal process. Something is just not right this year with English. Im repeating and got a c2 last year so something's not right IMO.

That's terrible! :(. I completely agree with you!I was really shocked when I saw my result...
I was getting an A2/A1 in all of my homework and exams in 5th and 6th year...I got an A1 in the mocks.
What did I get on Wednesday? A C3.

    ;)

I'm not even that good at English so I've no idea how I pulled it off :pac: A lot of it's just down to your performance in the exam on the day I guess so while you definitely deserved it more than me I might have just done better in the exam itself. Also much of English is subjective so it depends on the examiner... maybe you should get it rechecked you never know :) But then again I did work my ass off in this subject :P

I was burping up essays every second day and even after graduating! :P Ah but with 6 other A1s you hardly got it by accident ;) I'm thinking the examiner didn't like my short story or something like that, I don't think I write the same as most 17/18 year olds so it might not have suited the short story genre... Because in saying that, my P2 was pretty much fine from what I could tell, but I guess I'll find out soon :) I was happy to get an A2 anyway :D I'm considering a recheck but the thought of falling lower </3 :L

I got a C1 aswell and thought I pretty much had B secured, I did well enough work and actually enjoyed both papers, everything that came up was what I was hoping for too, nice to see I'm not the only one. Yet my friend who got a D3 in his mocks, got a B2?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4 Jen2011

    Aw no :( Really?!
I felt the same way on the day of the exam...It's so unfair
Don't worry, there's still a chance of an upgrade if you appeal :)
It's comforting to know that I'm not the only one.
