Hi ... I know that this question has been asked a million times but please bear with me I'm totally confused! Any ideas how much it would be to tax a 05 Citroen C4 car/van? Have a really good offer on one but don't want to go down the route of stating it'll be used for business use only as I don't have a business and wanna be covered by insurance ..... thanks in advance for your help!

    No its not

I did this for a year and a half. Traffic corps were happy I was using the van privately as it was taxed as so, I could use it whenever I liked and still had room in the back for tonnes of stuff

More people at that than you think ;)

Which is all well and good untill you meet a gard that does give a shít, then the fun begins with awkward questions such as purpose of said van, where were you just coming from, was it a commercial purpose, can you back it up, can I see your certs etc etc etc. Been there, done that

Mark my words, they are out there.

OP, get the engine size and see here

Being a car-van I'd imagine it's diesel so it's probably the 1.6 HDi engine. In that case it would be circa €480 for tax a year. About €150 more than the commercial one but well worth the money.

As dgt says if and when you find a Garda who does give a **** if it's taxed properly then you could be in a spot of bother. Easily worth the extra €150 a year for peace of mind imo.

Plus, your insurance will say "for social, domestic and pleasure". For €150, go with pvt tax. If it was a huge amount, i'd probably consider commercial tax, but would insure it as such too. Also helps that i have a business :)

It will state SDP on the policy to accomodate people with..... Privately taxed vans ;)

It should be on your policy too.

I went for a tear around the sally gap in the Hiace or lets bring the Berlingo to the Shelbourne just doesn't cut the mustard though :pac:

    I just said that.....!!!

All commercial policies have to have SDP to acompany non commercial taxed vehicles.

You are also covered for business purposes, which I can only imagine is not commercial but stuff like meetings, transporting employees etc. Not sure on business purposes, just taking a wild stab

Hi folks, i'll be buying a 2.2 commercially van next week and am wondering does anyone know can i renew the tax on it without providing a VAT number? (i dont have a business) i would tax it privately but its nearly 900 quid instead of the 300 if i tax it commercially.

Any help would be great thanks

Depends where you live TBH,but your PPS will do. You'll have to sign a declaration saying you'll only be using it for business ;),think you've to go into the cop shop to do that.

I think you'd want to be mad to tax a van privately, you're just throwing money away. I've had lots of commercials, all of which are commercials, and none of the jobs i've had mean i need one, just want the cheaper tax,and may as well because i don't need back seats. I have a car too,but that gets taxed once a year for 3 months as it only gets driven a couple of miles up the road every now an again by herself. In the last week i've noticed the amount of scaremongering people on this forum are at,we all need to live a little!

NO can t tax it commercially if you do not have a business because you will have to fill out form rf111a. a declaration that the vehice will only be used as goods carrying vehice in course of the owners business. and some tax office look for proof of business . and if you tax it privately you might has to pay more vrt
