Any thoughts on Noel Magee, former Commonwealth professional champion and former Irish senior amateur champion?

He beat Steve Collins in the senior final in 1984 at the age of 18. He then beat Steve 4 months later in a box off to represent Ireland against the USA. He went pro at 19 and went on to win the Commonwealth title beating the undefeated Garry Delaney. Also fought for the European title and twice for the British title. Had a high ranking of 6 in the WBO and 7 in the WBC. Also brother of Terry and Eamonn Magee. Im family so thats why I know so much :)

He used to do the door weekends at Donard bar used to be in Arlington as well i lost a right few quid on him the time he fought Corbet 100 quid double with a 2/1 winner at the horses I used to live in Newcastle10 or 12 years ago,NoelL was a very heavy hitter in his day thats why i fancied him to beat Corbet

Noel shud never have fought Corbett. He came out of retirement after almost 2 years because he needed the money. Also since he was 17 he fought at light-heavy and cruiserweight was never his weight. But fair play to Corbett he was up and coming but never fought the best Noel.

I knew that and even at that i thought he would be far to good for Corbet,i had said that to him before they met but with Noel getting injured early his chance was gone he had to much class for Corbet i thought at that time

The best Noel was wen he fougt Garry Delaney to win the Commonwealth title in 1995. Also the night he beat Tony Wilson in Dublin, he was a former British champion and Olympic quarter finalist. Its a shame that some only remember that Corbett fight and base his career on that especially people frm Ardoyne/ bone areas.

Twice. Once in the final of the Irish seniors and the second in a box off to represent Ireland v USA. Also were gym mates as pros for few years. Steve went on to be such a legend and is a really nice guy. Noel and he met couple of years ago at the opening of a gym in belfast and still got on great. And those 2 defeats still get under Steves skin :)
