Insulation collar on Velux windows

Hi there, we are currently getting quotes for velux roof windows for our new build.... six going into the attic for possible conversion to living accomodation down the line and four going into a vaulted ceiling in our kitchen/diner. In addition to the windows and flashing we have been quoted for insulation collars which go around the windows. Talking to friends who have recently built, none of them have heard of the insulation collars and I wondered whether they make much of a difference and are really necessary??

These features are a new addition to velux windows. Current building regulations oblige us to insulate using very thick layers of insulation compared to in the past. When one changes from very thick insulation ( i.e. bewteen the rafters ) to very slender or even no insulation ( at window reveals ) the local surface tempearure drops and you get condensation forming. Black mould and even frame rot can follow.

That's what the collars are for.

I've recently put in an insulated collar for roof windows from a different manufacturer. It's basically a few strips of insulating material that fit nicely around the sides of the frame to keep it warmer. One thing to note is that the opening has to be made bigger to allow the insulation to fit around. Think it was 20mm extra each side. Check manufacturers installation instructions beforehand.
