I know there is a bunch of Accom threads popping up, but my family are wondering for the younger brother, what his alternatives might be if he doesn't get on-campus. Is there an externally run similar facility? Or are digs possibly the only option?

    Cheers.

He could opt for a house share, there are a few people on here looking for people to share with & also there's a student accom. forum on here under Edu. I also seen a sign up in UCD the other day, I think it's residences for Catholic students near UCD, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called.

Here's the third level accommodation forum

DON'T LET HIM GO INTO DIGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
He'll most likely hate it. A lot of folks who let out digs to students turn out to be fierce trouble. Firstly, most of them charge more than other accommodation, yet only allow you to stay 5 days a week.
Many of them have curfews, which will impact on a students social life. In fact, a friend of mine (who was paying about €130/week IIRC) was in a house where the land-lady locked the kitchen outside of meal hours , and switvhed off the wireless when she went to bed. And I'm not sure she even gave the deposit back.
Also, its like going back into a family situation, meals at a designated time, no parties etc. He'll miss out on a lot of what should be a great experience.

His best bet is trying to find fellow students here on boards, or do a college sharing search so that he can be living with people in a similar situation to him and get making friends quickly.

In fact the best friends I made were in Res in first year, and have been living with them since. Don't allow him go to digs!
