If that were to happen I wonder would the government feel safe in selling their share of EI and would Eithad be interested in taking full control?

Think Eithad can only take 49% stake in the Airline due to EU law.

Operation: Jack up share Price for better selling profit.

    Agent: Michael O'Leary.

    Status Mission Accomplished

I don't see that as the case. How would O'Leary's offer have jacked up the price? Surely Etihad's offer is implicitly contingent on O'Leary's offer failing. Otherwise Ryanair's stake is not for sale.

If anything, Ethiad's interest in acquiring more shares in Aer Lingus, will drive up EI's share prices..

Yeah thats right. Non EU companies can only acquire a 49% stake.

Singapore Airlines has a 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic.

The difference here is that once FR and the govt are off the share register then a 49% holding would be more than enough to effectively control the airline from a practical standpoint. You would only need the support of the employee pension funds as just one example to push through most things at a shareholders meeting. O'Brien would also push them over the 50% mark as would the pilots holdings.

With VA I would suggest that the bearded one has the other 51% either directly or through trusts so SA don't get a controlling interest.

Typically insightful analysis from the Indo:
With Ryanair already having offered €1.30 a share to take full control of Aer Lingus, Etihad could reasonably be expected to have to table at least that much if it eventually made an offer to buy Ryanair's holding in its rival.
