The Sindo article was more than two weeks after the event and after the matter had been extensively discussed on the Internet, including on Pprune. Increasingly, the print media seem to be just reporting stuff that has been posted on the Net. 37.gif

30 minutes fuel remaining on a commercial airliner is cutting it very fine.

In fact it isn't just Ryanair, several others had the problem. It's also not as scary as it appears. The mayday wasn't for low fuel as such but the fact that the aircraft had reached their minimums which as stipulated is 30 mins. A Mayday is required in that situation in order to get priority.

I think this rule came in as a result of an accident in New York where a Colombian ?? aircraft crashed out of fuel because they didn't declare an emergency just commented they were low on fuel. ATC vectored them the long way round instead of a direct routing.

On another point, from reading the Ryanair Deputy Chief Pilot's memo. Is being an arrogant ***** part of the requirements of being a management pilot in Ryanair? Apparently.

Stephen McNamara of Ryanair and Evan Cullen of IALPA were duking it out on RTE News at One:

...here's what the Avherald produced on this yesterday, all fact, no Sindo-esque bull crap

I'd suggest getting aviation news from this site rather than a newspaper, if ever a man knows what he's talking about it's Simon Hradecky

Never mind the Ryanair bashing. This the paragraph that leapt out at me. All non Spanish operators diverted. Only Spanish operators landed. Far from investigating Ryanair maybe the Spanish authorities should be looking at their own airlines and questioning their diversion and bad weather procedures. I find it hard to believe the skies miraculously cleared only for the Spanish.
Beginning 19:52Z until 20:48Z a number of aircraft on approach to Madrid aborted their approaches and went around including all non-Spanish operators, except for eight flights of Spanish only operators which continued their flights for landings on Madrid's runways 18.

Spanish ATC has long being criticised for it's lack of professionalism. Are we to now to think the same of their airlines?

O'Leary has had to really backtrack. The Indo not a bit impressed that he gave them a different version to what he said at a later press conference.

Is it odd that the fuel is measured on shut down?

Surely more fuel would be used during taxi that could put an aircraft below minimums even if it wasn't at landing?

That first AL incident is absolutely rediculous!! Does anyone on here fly into Spain? Are all controllers as pigheaded and arrogant as the guys in Barcelona seem to be, or is this just an isolated incident?

Spain has easily the worst ATC in Europe, and possibly the world. Madrid is even worse than Barcelona.

if 3 planes are able to land 77, 67 and 66 minutes longer than its planned flight time, that to me signifies that Ryanair did absolutely nothing wrong and as usual, people dont know the facts of the case and just bash the airline.

i cant believe this is making news, theres nothing out of the normal here at all only people looking to cause trouble.
