Have sky+, just upgraded TV no scart port only HDMi, rang sky and they want to charge €100 for a new box and €15 per month for SKY + HD as they don't do a SKY+ box anymore? Can they do this? Do not want HD at all?

No they can't force you to sign up for HD. Did you threaten to cancel?

Curious that there's no scart in the new set, it's still quite widely used. Though I suppose in about 3 - 5 years it will be completely obsolete.

All new Sky+ boxes are now HD, though you don't have to take out a HD subscription. Threaten to cancel your current sub alltogether, and see if they will give you a free HD box or a at least a heavily discounted upgrade & installation.

So long as you have the HD box, Sky will hope that you'll eventually be tempted to upgrade to the HD pack.

If they simply won't play ball, consider one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003DQ0N8C/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=hdmitoscart-21&linkCode=as2&camp=1634&creative=19450&creativeASIN=B003DQ0N8C.

I have no idea how good or otherwise these are, don't know anyone who has tried this. Firstly though I'd try and wrangle a HD box out of Sky.

    Good luck!

What make is your tv? I am yet to see a tv without a scart, although Samsung and new sony tvs have a phono-type scart adaptor instead of a conventional scart connection on the back?

you could buy a second hand sky hd box , then just ring them up and pair the card.

thanks for your suggestions, the tv is an LG LED and it defo does not have a scart, did not threaten to cancel with sky yet, really don't want to change but am going to have another go today and see what happens.

If you get through to 'cancelations' mention UPC, tell them they're doing a 'good deal' at the moment for new customers, like a shiny new PVR, half price for 3 months etc, and your considering changing to them. Of course if Sky were to make a counter offer, "I would probably sitick with Sky for another while".

(Only to save the hassle of getting new cable installed)

I am pretty sure your TV set would have phono video and audio inputs. That can be connected to your existing Sky box phono outputs.

    You need one of these.

They are less than a €4 on ebay incl postage . Its called a Scart to RCA lead.

    scart-2101.jpg

Scart to Box, Red White and Yellow to AV in on TV (normally as the side).

But the picture quality on this would be way worse that the picture quality on a fully wired scart (RGB), right?

Some new walker TV's come with a 4pin 3.5mm "headphone" type connection and they supply a 3.5mm to phono adapter in the box. This can be connected to scart. Read the TV manual carefully. Any yellow round connector is probably video in from scart or even a headphone connector. It does not need to look like scart.

If it does not have scart nor composite nor RGB in consider bringing it back to the shop saying it does not work with your Sky box and that you need a different model.

Can you post exact make/model/photo or a link so we can try help?

My Samsung LED has a 'mini scart' socket,it came with a lead & adaptor. The socket is small so you might not know what it is.It's similar to the socket on the back of a PS2.
Some manufacturers don't supply adequate leads with their tv's so you end up buying your own.

Not hugely in my experience. And certainly not "way worse". For people who are used to SD it wouldnt be an issue.

You are converting a digital source back to analogue anyhow so I dont know how you could possibly wreck it any more.

The days of pay operators charging for their proprietary hardware should be long gone. Especially HD receivers, given their cheap and easy availability. Of course they will try and get away with it from as long as they can witout replacing their proprietary boxes. There is no genuine reason that people should not be supplied with a HD box so that they can receive the free to air services like BBC HD/RTE2HD/CH4HD/ITVHD etc without subscription. Its just greed.

For many it simply comes down to price,I wouldn't be without HD now even though I resisted the temptation for a long while.Sky gave me a great deal so cost isn't a factor for me.

I know of people who splashed out on 50" tv's yet have analogue tv still but have themselves convinced the picture is great.Wait 'till they see RTE2HD on saorview then they'll realise how crap the picture they had really was.

Back on topic, anyone who has been with Sky for a long time should be entitled to a free HD box regardless of whether they want the HD pack or not.

IMO the best HD channel is free. BBC make some of the best documentaries in the world and is completely free all you need is a HD capable box.

Can you post the model number of your new LG TV so we can look up the connections available to you?
