Or is that a bad idea i.e could cause slipping?

I know its the belt(on the drivers side of engine) as if I pour a little water on it while the engine is ticking over, the squeaking stops for a few seconds.

Does anyone know what this belt is for and if its easy to replace? Thanks

At a wild guess it's probably the alternator belt. Adjust it.

More than likely the alternator belt, just get it replaced or at least looked at. Not expensive and don't spray it with anything. Probably auto tensioned so its unlikely not to be worn.

On her R50 engine the aux belt was actually fine but the 10yr old tensioner was allowing it to squeak. The independent MINI expert I know reckoned he would need to add these bits to stock as there had been a few others recently.

As your belt also drives the supercharger I'd get it looked at.
There is such a thing as "belt dressing" but I doubt silicone lube is a good idea here.

That's the charger belt,it's also a serpentine so drives a few other components too,if it's squealing it's slipping i.e worn - get it looked at.

If its the supercharged s version have a good look at the tensioner, the damper can fail and cause it to crash into the crank pully damaging it, €€€ to fix.

Could be an alt bearing too....anything you pour/spray on the belt will only absorb the sound temporarily...get it looked at...

I think I can change the belt myself, but there is a special tensioner tool that is needed to relieve tension on the belt that I need, anyone have any ideas where I could possibly get a lend of one?

No point in buying one, will only get to use it once!

    Any help appreciated.

I'd ask the same question on bmwdriver.net, there are a few mini owners there who may be able to help. I take it your car is a cooper S?
