in yesterdays Irish Times, John Waters had an article on the royal canal in Dublin, in which he mentioned the different gauges of the two luas lines

if you google luas and urban myths you will find an article in the Indo
Tram shams and other Luas urban myths exposed

    from january 2005 -
quite a come down for the paper of the record

however john w is noteworthy for his roots in rural ireland - so on transport topics maybe he should stick to asses and carts or massey fergusons

There was a lot of misinformation put out about the Luas for mischevious and possibly business reasons during the consultation and construction periods.

Notoriously, on the weekend before the Green line opened, a Sunday Business Post journalist did a hatchet piece where she quoted some hearsay during the trial runs, claiming that the ride on the trams was incredibly rough. There were a whole stream of pieces, particularly in the Indo and the Business Post pouring ridicule on the scheme from the point at which it looked as if it was going to happen.

Eh? They're both the same gauge.

    Not quite..

The track gauge is incidental at 1435mm but the swept gauge is different. Basically the Green line allows for wider trams than the Red line as it was originally intended to be upgradeable to a Metro; this is what is meant when it is said that the gauges are different. In fact all the original Green line trams are now on the Red line. By swept gauge I mean the separation between the two tracks and not the spacing between the rail.

Loading Gauge is the term for that, KC :)
