Just wondering what's the legality of a bank discussing the status of a personal account with third party, say a creditor.

Depends on what was said. Sometimes standard info is given and the 3rd party joins the dots and it can appear they have been told something when the have not really been told anything.

If you have a complaint log it with the bank, get final response, if not happy take it to the ombudsman.
