Clay pipes

Do ye find clay pipes when cultivating land? I'm always coming across stems, but never bowls - probably because of the fairly heavy soil in my Dublin garden. Connemara friends have found both stems and bowls with Land League and Parnell slogans inscribed on them, and sent a couple of whole pipes up to the museum.

Someone told me that these white clay pipes were the 18th- and 19th-century equivalent of cigarettes - smoke them and throw them away.

I found a few of them in the old Garden. probably the great grandfathers or the neighbours, I found the bowl. A dudeen pipe.

Any printing or embossing on it?

there used to have a large pottery in arklow, and a lot of the waste broken pottery used to be used as filling for drains, instead of stone, over time these shallow drains, used to get ploughed and harrowed around the fields.
