So Many Processes running at once?

I'll confess I'm far from an expert with laptops to start with.

My laptop has been running a little slow today so I checked my task manager and there are 122 processes running. Google Chrome seems to be eating this up with over 280k (not sure what k is) running together under 9 different processes. Can I stop these or what are they for?

I also have a skype one at 66k. I use skype a lot so perhaps thats okay?
I don't use internet explorer ever and it's running at 36k?

I'm not sure what these number represent but it seems an awful lt and I think potentially it's why my laptop is running slower.

Anyone have any experience on this?

I have 4gb Ram and an i5 processor. The laptop is just under a year old and is a toshiba.

    Thanks!

Holy cow!!! What are you doing to the poor machine? :D

I'm running a web browser with plenty open tabs and Skype and I'm nowhere near your 122 processes... :p

You mean 280.xxx k? That would be the amount of memory currently used by Chrome.

I believe Chrome is running each tab in a separate session.

You can, but this will close the corresponding tabs.

But your problem is not Google Chrome. You should really clean up your start-up routine (autoruns or Ccleaner) and have a look at Black Viper's service tweak guide for your OS

Chrome has a lot of processes open, because you have a lot of tabs open. Or even a few. I wouldn't worry too much about chrome.

Explorer is not the same as internet explorer. Explorer is absolutely needed, and is essential for windows to run.

As for skype, if you're not using it, then close out of it completely.

Hit the start button, type the word "msconfig" into the search field and then hit enter when it finds msconfig.exe.

Open that, and click on the tab that says startup, take a screenshot and post it up here, and we'll be able to tell if there's anything there that shouldn't be

MSCONFIG is a troubleshooting utility, not really a startup manager and therefore better be left alone. There are better tools for that. MSCONFIG only tells you a fraction of what's really going on compared to Autoruns.

I have 105. frankly though I'm aware theres junk running but it's so minute half the time (remote connection processes for Teamviewer and Logmein, Media sharing, etc) that I just let them run. But this is a 6-core processor machine clocked at 2.8 Ghz and plenty of ram. Successfully overclocked it to 4.0Ghz for a while, but it was a pointless boost in performance and made the machine more noisey than I like it to be (silent)

A non-tweaked clean installation of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit reports ~40 processes (from all users) after all delayed services have been started.

Can you download CCleaner and install it and run it. On the left hand side go to "Tools" and then "Startup".

On the Bottom Right hand side it says "Save to text file" - Hit that button.

    Post the text file here.

Had to post two screenshots. The highlighted ones in the second pic are the ones that aren't in the 1st one.

    Hope this helps.

You have way too much running on start up, all you should run on start up is O/S and antivirus, delete everything else and reboot.

Right, this is all fair and well. But removing the likes of the synamtec driver, and some of the toshiba utilities will make gestures, some of the toshiba hot keys etc not work.

There's no harm in unticking almost everything and then reticking the ones you want of course.

Why don't you just "Save to text file"...

    WC2Nn.jpg

and then copy/paste the result here (or attach the txt file)?
