    Hi im upgrading my rig,

Im wondering will i put my old creative xfi fatality(with front panel) back in or use the onboard sound (asrock z77 pro3).

A friend was saying the onboard sound is so much better now than the xfi.

I doubt it. The quality of onboard sound may have improved over the last couple of years - better SNR, etc. - but a dedicated card will still give you cleaner audio, not to mention a lot more configuration options. I used to own an X-Fi XtremeGamer (similar to yours) and it still beat the pants off the onboard audio of my motherboard.

An old X-Fi still beats the pants off any on board sound I've ever heard.

(one exception being the X-Fi Xtreme-Audio which is basically just an Audigy 2)
