Mazda 5 front fog light retrofit?

Hi, I was driving in heavy fog a couple of times lately and could have really used front fogs to help.

My Mazda 5 has 2 circular apertures at the front which I'm guessing are for optional foglights (they have a wee plastic grill cover at the moment).

Is it a hassle to get fog lights put in here?
Will the wiring be there but sealed off at the point?
The fog light switch is a single (spring) movement on the light stalk. Would that then operate front and rears simultaneously or is an extra switch required?

    Any info appreciated. Thanks.

On most cars there is a kit for a retrofit consisting of a new stalk, the lights and whatever wiring/relays are required. A dealer would have this but no doubt would be costly. Try and get the part numbers and do some googling.

OK, thanks, I'll check it out.

In my innocence I thought it might be just a couple of lamp units fitted and hey presto...

    Apparently not.

I'd have an ask over on the owners clubs, somebody there's bound to have done it before.

I don't see a Mazda option, but these are a great idea if you were going the DIY route

    http://www.coplus.com.tw/scoo/scoo.html

They tick all the boxes for bling, DRL, foglight and bling. Bling is good.

    Thanks for the advice. Appreciated.

DIY route not an option, unfortunately, as I'm useless with anything vaguely mechanical.

I just called my regular mechanic (indy, sound as a pound) and he said he'll look into it for me. He'll tak to his auto electrician guy and come back with options / costings.

So, ye are right, there'd be a lot more to it than attaching a couple of lamps and could get pricey.

    Not worth the outlay.

    Thanks again.

The wiring is definitely there behind the bumper. I've fitted a couple of these genuine kits myself and it's very straightforward using this kit. Supplied in it are new fog light bezels, allowing the new fog lights to fit in place, and a replacement indicator stalk which has the switch for both front and rear fogs.Genuinely relatively straightforward to fit this kit for anyone of moderate DIY skill with no wiring to be done. Very neat too.

Thanks for that, Maztech. How much would a kit like that cost?

"relatively straightforward to fit this kit for anyone of moderate DIY skill" Yeah, you'd want to see the towel rack I tried to hang and the new lampshade in the hallway that I had to wire (it now makes a high-pitched whine when on). Not just not my strong point, a major weakness.

At least you're making the effort SuperGrover.!! nothing ventured etc etc.!!!! As long as anyone walking past your new lampshade don't start to light up too!!

The most recent one I've done was on my brother in law's 12 reg 5 back in feb. From memory, I think it was €260-270 or thereabouts to buy. Expensive compared to some aftermarket stuff available but well worth it for the sheer simplicity of fitting as there was no drilling, cutting or wiring and it tied into the car's original pre-wiring easily. The neatness of the finished article was great too.

I've fitted them to a 2008 model too some time back and it was no more difficult than the newer type car.

Thanks kindly for the info (and the encouragement).

So, I'm looking at 270 ish plus labour. Have to have a think (and consult with the personal financier at home) about whether that's justified for very occasional fog driving.

On the other hand, it would look way better than the two plastic inserts that are there right now. On the other other hand, it's a 2007 Mazda 5 so not not going to look particularly cool either way.
