Temperature gauge reading low

My OH drives a 2007 Peugeot 207 cc 1.6 petrol. I have noticed that as long as she has the car, it uses coolant to the point where the bottle could be empty after approx 1 month or 6 weeks.

She is driving home from Dublin today and tells me that the temp gauge (which normally reads about 90) is reading much lower than this, only approx 30 and is moving around quite a bit.

Any ideas on what this might be? I fear that the collant level may be dangerously low and therefore not giving an accurate reading to the temp gauge. Any help appreciated.

First thing to to find out where the coolant is going. It's not advisable to be driving a car that's loosing coolant. It could cause the car to overheat and blow the head gasket.

Not sure why the car isn't getting up to temperature. It could be that the thermostat is broken (stuck open) so the car never reaches the desired temperature.

Either way, get the car to a mechanic before the job becomes a lot more costly! :)

P.s. Seems these coolant sensors give trouble:

My thoughts too. I presume she's not still driving on it? If so, have her stop immediately.

Fill up with water in nearest garage and stick a big bottle in the trunk just in case.
The system will have to be flushed anyway as part of fixing whatever's wrong so just go with water for now.

i had similar, but with 98 toyota, went on motorway, temperature fell down, at the end was thermostat stuck in open position. As for coolant loss, could be just leak somewhere, suggest you go to garage, and get car checked.

Thanks guys, yes the car is in a garage at the moment. I got her to stop and check the level on her way home and it was fine and all looked normal. She opened the cap of the coolant reservoir and all was fine so closed it again and drove home (approx 1 hour), during which time the temp gauge read approx normal (between 90 and 100). when she got home and stopped in the yard, she could hear water boiling even though the temp gauge was still between 90 and 100 and when opened the bonnet, could see the water bubbling but the level looked ok.

She left the car cool down for a little while and then brought it to a garage a few miles up the road but upon arriving there the coolant reservoir was empty!!! The mechanic looked at it and said it looked like some housing was leaking (not sure exactly what he said as herself was talking to him). It costs 130 + VAT + labour. He's gonna change that and then see but otherwise he thinks it could be head gasket. The car wasn't driven when hot as she is very good for keeping a check on the temp gauge and knows from experience not to drive if temp gets too high.

Any thoughts on this. Approx how much would one expect to pay to get the head gasket on a 2007 Peugeot 207 cc 1.6 petrol replaced.

    Thanks
