I’m having a bit of a footwear dilemma. I am off on holiday to Italy in a couple of weeks, we will be in Rome and Florence among other places so there will be a fair bit of walking on rough cobbled streets. I normally wear flip flops, but a combination of the cobbles and the reputed dog poo and dirt of the streets is turning me off that idea! I think I would prefer something with a closed toe, but I will be wearing skirts and dresses during the day, so don’t want to go down the trainer route.

So can anyone suggest some nice comfy shoes with a closed toe that won’t look out of place with skirts and dresses?

You could try Toms? They are nice to wear in warm countries because they are breezy! I personally think the white or black crochet ones are really pretty and wearable with dresses/shorts/skirts/etc..

They look lovely on the website, can you buy them in shops here?

I've seen Toms on sale in Schuh - I really like the wedge ones but they are quite pricey.

My wife has Sketcher shoes, something like a pump with straps across them. They can be got with different patterns and colours, so can suit a dress.

Having been to Rome and Florence a few times I can tell you that flip flops all day every day will kill your feet, knees, back by the end of the trip. You will do so much walking and standing you really do need something that will support your feet too. I am not saying that from an OAP point of view either as went for the first time when I was 27 and am now only a few (;)) years on from that.
There are a number of good options in Schuh at the moment that will be nice with skirts and dresses. Merrell (not 100% sure on spelling) flip flops are sold there and they are really nice and really comfortable. IMHO way nicer than FitFlops while offering the same level of comfort but actually look cool (again IMHO only).
You can also wear runners with your jeans and / or other trousers too and they look good with shorts.
