Turbo Gone - Volvo S40

    Well Lads,

As the thread says, I think the turbo is gone in my car. No real warning sign's, was just driving and it went. There is quite a bit of mileage on it and it probably was overdue a service alright. Brought it in to a garage this morning to have a look at it.
I know its meant to be quite expensive to fix. Anyone able to give me a ballpark figure as to what it will set me back?

    Appreciate any responses

    Thanks

Which shape S40 and which engine?

Not 100% sure about the engine and it's in the garage now so can't check.
    It's a 2007 4 door sedan (the standard one).
    I think it's 2.0D I4/5
    Transmission - 5 speed manual

1.6d was 5 speed. 2.0d was 6 speed. The turbo gives trouble on these engines if they are not serviced regularly or if the incorrect grade of oil is used.

The 1.6 is the one that gives the most turbo trouble and has a 5 speed box so I will assume it is a 1.6.

To supply and fit a reconditioned unit from a reputable source and also take steps to avoid a repeat failure, such as replace the turbo oil feed line and banjo bolts, remove the sump and replace the oil pump pickup pipe should cost you around €1000 in a decent independent garage. You will get cheaper quotes but they will either be black market cash jobs or will be cutting corners on the preventative measures.

The Turbo can get clogged up with soot as well . I found out when i was breaking a diesel bmw. I took it off the car & gave it a good spray off wd40 to free the turbine that was stuck solid.

What do you mean when you say it "went" - no power after 1700 revs or so, or something much more ominous? The former happened to my last car (2005 V50 2.0D) and it turned out to just be a sensor that needed replacing.

If there was a cloud of smoke then it's defo gone means oil in intercooler/radiator

    Thanks for the reply lads.
No cloulds of smoke or anything like that. No noises.
Literally 1 minute from home, power seemed to go in car (felt like the car was being pulled/dragged). Seemed stange. Parked up the car. About an hour later, I tried it again. Was OK in first, not great in second and third and then 4th & 5th were a waste of time. Literally taking 30-40secs to build up speed.

Does it sound like the turbo ya? Had been a while getting service alright (jsut before Christmas I think).

Are you sure it's not just a pipe coming off the turbo? First thing I'd check anyway...

Could be turbo actuator solenoid/hose... Intercooler to turbo hose...
You might be in for a nice surprise.
    Marty.

It just sounds to me like your turbo isn't kicking in. This could be due to a number of possible problems such as sensor or vacuum issues. I would be inclined to rule these out before deciding that the turbo itself is fubarred.
