    Hi everyone :)

Just finishing a thesis for college and not from a medical background. I was wondering if anyone could refer me to the names of major medical publications both online and offline in Ireland and the UK. I know it sounds quite simple but want to make sure I don't select mickey mouse ones :o

Using the impact factor of the various journals would be a more reliable method of identifying the leading publications.

Well that controversial. Besides I doubt you will find an Irish journal with an impact factor much above 1.

    OP Irish journals include:
    http://www.springer.com/medicine/internal/journal/11845
    http://www.imj.ie/
I think there is a psychiatry one also but I don't know the name
there may be more but I don't know of them

There are tonnes of UK ones.
    The big name ones are
http://www.bmj.com/ (they have a whole family of journals)
http://www.thelancet.com/ (they also have a family of journals)

    plus a whole bunch more

Here's a list of free ones
    http://freemedicaljournals.com/

The Lancet and BMJ are two which are relatively general in their scope and well though of (Lancets mistakes re MMR aside !).

Generally most specialities have specific journals which are well regarded
GP's tend to read the British journal of General practice
And those involved in sports medicine the British journal of sports medicine
(Both part of the BMJ network) unfortunately these are both fully available by subscription only (or to memebers of the relevant colleges).

The Cochrane database is free and is a great source of evidence based medicine. This is also quite general in scope
    http://www.cochrane.org/

The Irish journals are tbh a bit crap. The IMJ actually published something I did but during interviews in the UK it was not considered to be all that valuable on the CV :(
GP's in Ireland can get Forum which tends to publish opinion pieces, reviews and not original research. It's not bad though (as a magazine though rather than a peer reviewed journal).

Hope that helps a bit. It would be easier if the OP was able to be a bit more specific about what area they were really interested in (If it's medicine in general the responses so far are quite good though).

Because they're full of vanity research and resumé-building tosh. :pac:
