    Hi all,

i'm looking for advice re car tyres. I do quite a bit of driving (approx 25,000 miles per year) in my 2004 TDI VW Golf, 195-65-R15 tyre size. At the moment, my tyres are almost worn out, I have Marshal Power Racer on the front and Toyo at the rear. I have found that both of these makes have pretty good lifetime giving me approx 40,000 miles. The Marshal tyres I have found to be fine for grip (though I don't drive like a lunatic) and have slightly better lifetime compared to the Toyos.

I have rang a few places for prices and the following is what I have so far:

Cork, Firestone 85 Eur per tyre (apparently give very good mileage) + 4 wheel alignment extra
Cork, Hankook 73 Eur per tyre and a tyre guarantee if tyre gets damaged + 50 Eur for 4 wheel alignment
Waterford, Toyo 75 Eur per tyre (highly recommended by the tyre merchant selling them for mileage) + 4 wheel laser alignment for 20 Eur (similar system to whats used in the NCT)

What are your thoughts on this. I am after a tyre which is reasonably priced and give reasonable grip but also have a very good wear resistance that will return 40,000 - 50,000 miles before being needed to be changed.

Do people have much experience with the above brands? Or are their any others which people have found be good?

    Thanks in advance

That sounds very reasonable prices for all those tyres, take your pick. I'd go with the Toyo if it we're me. 20 euro for the allignment sounds like it's worth it works too.

Just bear in mind that grip is often sacrificed for longevity for long life tyres.

When did the NCT start doing wheel alignments?

I find that the compound on the Toyo is soft which means they won't have a long life. I would go with the Hankooks from that list, my father had two fitted recently and they are a decent tyre for the money.

I have Firetone on my Mondeo diesel. Put them on around last September, bearing in mind the Mondeo are hard on front rubber, I will need to change the front 2 soon, but the back have a good few mile left on them. I cover about 40k klms per year, mainly motorway driving. Had contentionals (sp?) on before lasted around the same but are much dearer.

My Local man does good deals on Hankook and as far as I am aware he throws in a free 4 wheel alignment if 4 tyres are purchased.

I would never buy 4 tyres without either getting €20 off the price or a free 4 wheel alignment.

None of the tyres listed would be in the top bracket for wear in my experience. Firestone would be the best of the three but by no means brilliant.

Bridgestone or Michelin would give better life though they are slightly more expensive.

In any case 40-50k miles from a set of tyres on a heavy car like a Golf is pretty optimistic IMO, unless you adapt your driving style specifically to minimise tyre wear.

Continentals on my own car. 39,000 miles and the threads have around 4mm left on them.

The one thing I'd note though is that most of my driving is motorway. If I was to choose from that list I'd go with the hankooks but with a discount..!

this would mean smoother roads and less tyre wear right.

got 40000 miles from the rears on Continentals and 20000 from the fronts.

I find them a good tyre but expensive.

But I guess you get what you pay for. :)
