    Hey guys,

Just had an idea for a new society, or if there was anything ever like this?

Was there ever a thing like a Paranormal Society? I think its a great idea. Could arrange trips and workshops for students, go to haunted places around ireland, camp there for the night. Would be a great soc for just meeting people and of course being scared together :p

Think you clicked on the wrong link. NUIG is a university.

There are pucks of equally nonsensical societies in NUIG.

Not that I'm suggesting that as a good reason for setting up another one.
What other societies are you an active member of, if you don't mind my asking, barry?

Also - what does a Paranormal Soc workshop entail?

What exactly makes one particular place more haunted than another?

Does it not fall into the realm of those "professionally qualified ghost hunters" with their MS Publisher framed certificates?

edit: I'm only coddin' ya btw, I love a ghost story

Correct me if I'm wrong, Chess, but isn't Skeptic Soc fundementally based around Atheism/Agnosticism?

Personally, I think it's a good idea for a society, I enjoy the concept of the paranormal, I do like the mystery behind the stories — despite the fact it's all nonsense — so I would support it. Although having said that, I probably wouldn't dedicate my time to the society, it's too valuable and it just wouldn't interest me enough.

Great idea Barry if there's people willing to put the work in and come up with the activities.

Best talk to Riona Hughes in the socs box for info on setting it up

I think their gig was ostensibly to "question unsubstantiated stuff", but yes, they did focus on the anti-religious aspect of it. It has more or less died in the last year anyway.
I think disproving/investigating/debating the existence of Ghosts etc. could certainly fall under their remit, and there is a limit to the number of societies which can revolve around the same topic.

I would be concerned that the Paranormal society would just focus on being subsidised for trips to "haunted" locations, where they could camp and have a piss-up. Camping and piss-upping, is all well and good, but I would have an issue with the college contributing any money towards such trips. The USCG put a halt to the "Mystery Tour" bollocks last year, I think.

It's the closest they'd get to finding spirits anyway.

This is not the thread for it, but the skeptics' notion of bull**** is not necessarily the correct one in all cases. They would do well to bear that in mind in their mission to question everything.

    many 'skeptics' aren't in reality - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudoskepticism
