Has anyone used www.solowalks.com or similar company?

    Hi Folks

    I'm looking for ideas for a short holiday away and I found this site. It is ideal for me as I don't drive and it is hard to find accommodation near good hiking trails. Anyway I was wondering if anyone has gone on a self guided walking holiday before? What did you think of it and are there any things to look out for?

    I'm thinking of doing this trip;
    The Salzkammergut lakes Self-guided Tour

    Thanks to anyone who gets back to me with info.

    Dakan.

    I don't have that much to offer here, but seeing as nobody else has responded I'll throw in my 2c worth :)

    I've not used the company you named, but I've been on lots of self-guided walks through a company called Contours Walking Holidays. These have all been on long distance footpaths in England and Wales (Coast to Coast, SW Coast Path, Cleveland Way, Pembrokeshire Coast etc.).

    All I can say is that it's a great way to do a walk like this. I'm not overly fond of camping and like my creature comforts at the end of a days walking, so having your luggage forwarded on and just having to carry a daysack is ideal.

    The only thing I'd say is that time will fly by and it will all be over before you know it! For me at least, the first day is great, the second day drags a bit, the third day is a "why am I doing this?" kind of day, but after that time just seems to fly along and before you know it you've arrived at the end of the walk! You get into a bit of a routine as the days go on, and lose track of what day it is which is what makes the time go so quickly. I've done walks that take 14-15 days and the same applies.

    I've been thinking of doing some walks similar to what you have planned in Germany, such as King Ludwig's Way. Spending each night in a spotless German Gasthaus with hearty German food and beer definitely appeals to me I must say :)

    Hi Akun

    thanks for getting back to me but I've had to knock that holiday on the head. They wanted a minimum of two people per booking. When I contacted them saying I would be travelling alone they wanted to add €280 to the price. Can't see how they justify that, it is a self-guided walking holiday after all.

    Pity I was really looking forward to doing the trip in Romania.

    Thanks again.

    I assume that must be accommodation related, i.e. the various guest houses are charging a single supplement for the rooms. The company I mentioned above in the UK charges £18 per night extra for single travellers for that very reason but as you say it can work out expensive, in that case over £250 extra for a 14 day trip.
