Does anyone have a saorview tv or box in the city that picks up the stations without using an aerial? Am wondering as my son is a student with no stations in his house in Newcastle.I might get him a box if it the signal is strong enough.
think there is an unconnected UPC wire in the sitting room if that would boost it.

As far is I know, you'd need an aerial. I need one for my tv, which has a built in tuner. You'll get one for less than €20 in woodies or argos that should do the trick.

If saorview boxes are anything like freeview boxes, you'll always need an aerial of some sort. You can get set top digital aerials in maplin which should work with a saorview box...

I've a lil bit of wire in the aerial socket of my bedroom tv and can pickup the saorview channels, however it took a lot of messing to get the wire pointing in the right direction. Try it, but one of those cheap aerials might be a sound investment.

If you can currently get a signal off a portable aerial/hanger setup you will get Soarview with the same rig. I ran it (separately) off of an unpowered and powered aerial at home.

You might also want to ask in the terrestiral tv forum for more advice - they've been discussing it for over a year.

Try a cheap indoor aerial and see how it goes, also try the disconnected UPC cable; there have been posts here in the terrestrial forum of people picking up the Saorview signal via an internal UPC cable in strong signal areas. Reception could be intermittant in both case though but you won't know until you try.

Saorview of course recommend an external aerial for good reception.

There is NO SUCH THING as a digital aerial, so you can't.

You've no idea what the cable (UPC) goes to until you try it.

But any basic aerial might work just sitting on top of the TV.

    €1.49 in dealz http://www.dealz.ie/product-range/a-z/signalex-indoor-telescope-antenna/

Any €2 store will have a basic aerial that might work dependent on signal but for that money it's worth a try.

Isn't the main thing about an aerial for Saorview is that its directional, you need to point it at the mast.

I used one of the cheap €2 ones & it worked fine.Just depends on your location, the nearer you are to a mast the easier it is to pick up a signal. Some people have used coathangers & they worked.
