not sure whether this should be in politics or sports, but anyway......

having been off work for the last three weeks i have been glued to the olympics, obviously i had a keen eye on any irish competitors taking part. however i couldnt help but notice certain keywords or phrases from commentators/analysts after a lot of irish performances, these being 'disappoining' or 'unfortunate' or 'failed to make it' and so on. i know we are a small country and i am very proud of our medal winners and all the athletes but we were way off the mark in some events, also add in the euro 2012 in football as another example.

when you look at the likes of the high performance programme in boxing and the rewards it has produced surely something similar and a big overhaul is needed in other sports. surely sport in this country is big enough to warrant its own government dept. which can solely dedicate itself to sport in this country, along with success through medals and trophies etc. look at the income it would bring in through the hosting of sporting events. and even the depts. that were seperated from sport i.e arts and tourism would benefit from this. if certain stadia etc were brought up to date they could host many an event even aside from sport.
