Hi i am a novice photographer looking to get in to the field on a amatuer level. I am looking for a second hand dslr for around 200 euro. I have almost falling in to the trap of buying a dlsr type camera like one of the fuji finepix i have been looking at a canon 400d or something like that. What i am looking for is some help on what to buy and what to ask for when i do buy.

Thank you for any help given

That's a "how long is a piece of string?" question if ever I saw one!

What's this "trap" you mention? Have not handled any of the Fuji FinePix range myself but as far as I can see from a quick search on Google there's nothing wrong with them.
What do you want to photograph?
Maybe a point & shoot or a bridge camera would be a good starter for you. If you decide to upgrade later you can either sell it on or keep it as a backup/throw in the pocket/backpack/car/whatever...

Most importantly....take a *lot* of time to read whatever you can find on the net about photography. Yes, you *will* get confused for a while but if you spend enough time at it things will become more clear which will all help towards your final decision.

Also, be aware that as soon as you buy your first camera you'll start thinking about a new one or a better lens or a flash or...you get the idea...:D

I bought a lightly used Canon 20D including standard 18-55 image stabilised lens on Adverts.ie for a relative who was fed up with the shutter lag on a succession of compact cameras. He is absolutely delighted with it. It cost exactly 200 Euro. Although that particular model is now 7 or 8 years old it is still a very solid and capable camera and would take you quite a long way on your photographic journey.

I'm sure there are many other options, but that is what I would suggest just because I am more familiar with Canon than other brands.

If you can get a 400D for that price, go for it. The only problem is that people on adverts.ie seem to believe that their second hand camera is worth a hundred euro more than what any reasonable person would actually pay.

I eventually gave up trying to buy on there because I just couldn't get a reasonable price out of anybody (€600 for a body-only 50D? Jokeshop).

When you're buying, make sure to find out what the shutter count on the camera is. These dslrs are rated for 100,000 shutter clicks, and the shutter will likely fail somewhere around that number, so just be wary of paying a lot of money for one with more than 50,000 or so.

I see a couple of Sony Alpha 200s on adverts.ie in your price range. Not a bad camera at all and would be worth checking out if you can't find a 400D. Check the review on dpreview to see what you think.
