Would it be advisable to build an extension with 9" blocks and external wall insulation. The obvious advantage being the cost of materials and labour.

    What are the disadvantages?

    cheers

The only reald disadvantages are to do with external insulations's lifespan of around 25-30 years and the fact that it is more sensitive to impact damage. I don't care what any salesman says, external insulation systems will be damaged by impacts. There might be more difficulty in chasing the inner face of the wall, but it won't be a problem if the spark has propper equipment for it.

external insulation does not have a defined lifespan, this is nonsense.there are systems that give a 30yr guarantee but this does not determine its lifespan.
As for impact resistance of course it can be damaged if its hit by something of a large volume weight like alot of other things around your home but that is not to say it will get damaged by the odd ball hitting off it,obviously if its a continuous thing it will get damaged.

Ill try not to drive the car into the wall. Would it be common place to use hollow blocks with exterior insulation or do people generally go for the cavity wall

the standard wall is 215 block on flat, so its a solid wall.

I have never heard of a new build with hollow block and external insulation... i think you should check up the IAB certs for products to see if that substructure is acceptable.

again, external insulation and a "cavity wall" generally are not used on a new build.

+ 1 with syd, maybe stretch to quinnlite at insulation junctions for better thermal continuity
