I might be buying a second hand car this evening and want to know what the regulations are regarding driving it home having not yet been insured on it.

I am insured on a 1.6L car but this is a 2.0L and I'll be driving it from Enniscorthy to Dublin. I won't know if I'll be picking it up until late tonight after the insurance offices will be closed.

last time i viewed a car outside insurance office hours i just put a deposit on it and came back when its organised.

if your very confident your going to buy it, you could ring your insurance company now and arrange to switch it to the new car to begin at a certain time this evening.

I did this, however don't be afraid to walk away regardless if the car isn't right

I would only do that if it was a second viewing and a deal had already been agreed. You could just end up being stuck with no car until the next morning, if you didn't decide to buy.
