200,000km in my 06 volvo - any preventative work to do?

I bought it with 100,000kms on the clock and have literally done nothing other than oil, filters, tyres and brakes (including fluid), nothing! The previous owner had religiously serviced it at a Volvo dealer and I can't see a record of anything other than the same being done by them either

My assumption is that even though its the 1.8 chain driven petrol engine in the s40 there is something I should be doing to try get as many more clean miles as I can out of it?

What about plugs even, were they ever done.

As long as the oil was changed, the engine should be as healthy as any other.

At that kind of mileage, every single suspension component is probably worn out.

Keep on doing what you're doing and you should see another 100/200k km.

No doubt there is wear on them, can't really see the rationale for saying all suspension components are worn out, or probably worn out.

    Because there's 200k on them. :)

So all shocks, springs, ball joints, anti roll bars and bushings along with the wishbones and tie rod ends etc are all worn out ?

    I would side here.

The "preventative" element of the Title would lead one to believe that the OP is not looking to await failure.

No, but could probably do well with a good close inspection.

I knew there was something else, plugs have been changed regularly as well

As you can tell with 200,000km since 2006 its nearly all motorway miles, NCT never found a problem with the small amount of checking they do so would it actually be worth paying someone to check the suspension?

A lot of people are shocked that no problems have been found with 200,00kms done but I guess up until 10 years ago that amount of miles caused a lot more wear and tear than it does now with the motorways in place

200k is only 120k old money. that cars only really worn in, just keep following the service schedule and you could easily double that figure.

Service schedule is a little sparce that far in so I was worried every belt should be changed, aircon recharged, ball joints replaced etc.

If performed correctly the NCT is as decent a suspension check as you'll get in most garages.

Most shocks are past their life by 100k miles, and the other components would be a lot less I would have thought. Then again if its mainly motorway miles the whole setup could be in decent enough condition. NCT will reveal all.

So there seems to be enough faith in the NCT as a suspension test, does anyone know if there are any belts or water pump that should be changed, any belts I can see look fine to my untrained eye

I agree about an NCT revealing all, it should anyway. Don't agree with the most shocks comment though :)

Of course this was looked at, the price difference, higher tax and lack of a really well looked after model without 200,000km on it already made the daysul option not worth it, happy I went with the petrol still

Unless its an exceptional car my experiance is that cars are ok until 120k miles, around 130-140 they basically expire. Many things start expiring one after another and coupled with the low resale (non existant) in many cases the cars become unviable and are scrapped. Ive seen this with 2 family cars so far, one a 97 Corolla and second a Peug 405. Changing the oil only really protects the engine, unfortunately many other things go wrong, ie clutch/flywheel, wheel bearings, exhaust, brake disks, balljoints, shocks, steering racks, electrical failures, water pumps, alternator, battery even things like the keys and locks wearing out.

Well to be fair the average trip the car has taken is pretty far, I bet the doors and windows have been open and closed less than your average 80k miler, same goes for the amount of time between gears on the clutch, its mostly left in 5th on cruise control

I'm an optimist as you can probably see!

My XC90 has done well over the 200k (km). Regularly serviced. Not a bother on it.

Hey tvc15, I have a Mazda 6 1.8 with 330,000km, similar to yourself it's mainly motorway mileage with cruise control on. To date it's had 2 batteries, replacement wheel bearing front left and front right. Brake caliper rear right and replacment strut on the rear left.

I make a point of getting the guys that services it to put it on the ramp and check the suspension as I think this is probably where the wear is going to be other than the engine which is serviced regularly.

As another poster mentioned, with that kind of mileage she's worth little more than scrap, but on the flipside, depreciation is gone and when you keep on top of the servicing it's cheap motoring imho.

    Best of luck with it.
